Lesson 1.2

Written by Dr. Bre Hayward

Learning Objective

Before You Install

Start clean and moisturized: cleanse the scalp, deep condition the lengths, apply leave-in and seal. Pre-loading moisture gives the hair a reservoir for the weeks it will be hard to reach.

Caring for Hair Under the Style

A protective style isn't a vacation from care. Reach the scalp through the parts to cleanse roughly weekly to every ten days, mist moisture through the partings every few days, and follow with a light seal. The style protects the ends; you protect everything else.

Takedown & Recovery

Pre-treat with oil or conditioner, and work from the ends upward — never pull from the root. After removal, cleanse, deep condition, and give the scalp a few rest days before the next install. How you take a style down is where weeks of protection is kept — or lost.

Key Takeaways

Install on clean, moisturized hair — pre-load moisture

Cleanse the scalp through the parts about weekly

Moisture top-ups through the partings every few days

Takedown: pre-treat, ends first, then rest days

Why This Matters

The style is one third of the practice. What happens before and after it determines whether the hair underneath is healthier for the wear — and whether you keep the growth you protected.
