Phase Theory Beauty Co.™

Our Standards

The principles behind how we formulate, evaluate, communicate and improve.

Phase Theory Beauty Co.™ standards define the expectations we set for ourselves — from ingredient selection and formulation decisions to scientific communication, transparency and continuous improvement.

They are designed to keep one question at the center of our work:

“Can we explain
why we made this choice?”

The Operating Question

01Standard 01

Purpose Before Trend

Every featured ingredient should have a reason for being there.

We evaluate ingredients for their intended cosmetic function, compatibility within the formula, safety considerations and relevance to the product’s purpose.

An ingredient isn’t valuable simply because it’s popular, botanical or trending.

You can see this principle at work in Root Lab — how we approach formulation science, evidence and ingredient function.

“Formulation is about the system — not a single hero ingredient.”

02Standard 02

Evidence With Context

We distinguish what is established from what is still being studied.

We consider established cosmetic function, published research, emerging evidence, traditional use and formulation rationale as different forms of information — not interchangeable proof.

When evidence is limited, evolving or indirect, our communication should reflect that.

The same evidence framework guides how we write about ingredients in Root Lab.

03Standard 03

Ingredient Integrity

We choose ingredients intentionally and communicate them responsibly.

Our formulas may include botanicals, oils, humectants, proteins, conditioning agents, cleansing systems and other functional cosmetic ingredients selected according to the needs of each formula.

We don’t believe an ingredient should automatically be labeled “good” or “bad” simply because it is natural, synthetic or unfamiliar. What matters is its function, appropriate use and role within the complete formulation.

See what individual ingredients are and where they appear in the Ingredient Library — and how we think about them in Root Lab.

04Standard 04

Safety & Responsible Formulation

Safety is a requirement — not a marketing claim.

Product development should consider intended use, ingredient compatibility, appropriate preservation, stability, packaging, labeling and other relevant cosmetic safety considerations.

We work with manufacturing and formulation partners and review available product and ingredient documentation as part of our approach to responsible product development.

05Standard 05

Transparent Communication

We should be able to explain what we say.

Product descriptions, ingredient education and science content should distinguish cosmetic benefits from biological or therapeutic claims.

We do not intentionally present emerging research as settled science, traditional use as clinical proof, or conceptual illustrations as experimental results.

When we make a mistake or better evidence becomes available, our standard is to correct the information.

“We should be able to explain what we say.”

“Scientific visuals should teach — not overstate.”

Conceptual illustrations, educational diagrams and interactive models should be identified appropriately and should not be presented as experimental imagery or measured results unless they are based on documented testing.

06Standard 06

Continuous Improvement

Our standards are designed to evolve.

Cosmetic science, ingredient technology, manufacturing practices, packaging and consumer needs continue to change.

We periodically review our formulas, educational content and practices as better information and technologies become available.

Improvement does not mean chasing every trend. It means being willing to learn, reassess and make thoughtful changes when the evidence supports them.

How We Apply the Standards

Standards matter most when they shape decisions.

Our approach follows four recurring actions.

01 — Formulate. Define the product need, identify appropriate ingredient functions and consider how the complete formulation works as a system.

What Our Standards Do Not Mean

✦

Our standards are not third-party certifications.

✦

They do not mean every ingredient has clinical evidence.

✦

They do not mean every formula is identical in ingredient philosophy or composition.

✦

They do not guarantee the same result for every person.

✦

They do not replace product-specific directions, warnings or ingredient declarations.

About Our Standards

These standards describe Phase Theory Beauty Co.™’s internal principles for formulation, product development, education and communication.

They are not third-party certifications and should not be interpreted as regulatory approval, independent verification or a guarantee of individual product results.

Product-specific ingredient information, directions, warnings and disclosures should always be reviewed on the applicable product packaging or product page.
