New length is produced in the anagen phase, when cells at the base of the follicle build the hair fiber — typically for two to seven years. How long this phase lasts is largely set by genetics, which is why everyone has a different natural maximum length. At any given moment, about 85% of your hair is in anagen.
Over a short two-to-three-week window, the follicle winds down, detaches from its blood supply, and the strand settles in place above the scalp. Brief and invisible from the outside, catagen simply moves hair from making to resting.
For roughly three to four months the strand rests, anchored while a brand-new hair forms beneath it. Then it releases naturally. Shedding 50 to 100 hairs a day is simply the cycle renewing itself — not a problem to solve.
Key Takeaways
All new length forms at the root, in anagen
Anagen length — your natural maximum — is largely genetic
Shedding 50–100 hairs a day is normal cycle behavior
Cosmetic care can't speed the cycle; it supports the scalp and protects the fiber
Why This Matters
Once you understand the cycle, marketing promises about 'faster growth' lose their grip. What a good routine genuinely does is care for the scalp environment and protect the length you're growing — and that's where your influence lives.
