Lesson 2.3

Written by Dr. Bre Hayward

Soreness

Soreness is never a break-in period. It means tension is acting on follicles right now. The response is immediate: loosen or remove the source, and if a style can't be worn comfortably, it can't be worn — full stop. Comfort is the standard, not a preference.

Bumps Along the Hairline

Small pimple-like bumps at the hairline or around braids are irritation from tension — an early, reversible signal if you act. Remove the tension, keep the area clean and calm, and don't reinstall over it until it's fully settled.

Thinning Edges & Broken Pieces

Receding baby hairs, thinning temples and short broken pieces mean the damage has moved past a warning into a pattern. The response: eliminate tension entirely, switch to loose low-manipulation styles, condition the scalp gently, and — if edges don't recover or worsen — bring in a dermatologist. Early is reversible; late is not.

Key Takeaways

Soreness = tension now — loosen or remove immediately

Hairline bumps are an early, reversible signal if you act

Thinning edges mean switch to low tension and monitor recovery

Persistent or worsening loss belongs with a dermatologist

Why This Matters

Tension damage announces itself early — soreness, bumps, thinning — in that order. Knowing the sequence means you almost never have to reach the last entry on the list.
