Installed at low tension — especially at the hairline — most braid and twist styles serve well for up to six to eight weeks. Beyond that, new growth loosens the pattern and manipulation damage rises. While worn: moisture through the parts every few days, diluted cleanser through the parts weekly to ten days, and full drying before any covering.
Locs are a permanent structure with temporary rules: they concentrate whatever the scalp produces, so regular cleansing between locs is essential — buildup doesn't rinse away on its own. Keep locs moisturized, dry them fully, and retighten on a schedule that suits your texture rather than the calendar's ambition.
The rest week is part of the style. After takedown: pre-treat, work ends-first, cleanse, deep condition, and give the scalp a few open-air days before reinstalling. Rotating styles — and where they carry weight — distributes stress instead of compounding it in the same zones.
Key Takeaways
Braids and twists: low tension, six-to-eight-week ceiling, part care throughout
Locs concentrate buildup — regular scalp cleansing is non-negotiable
Fully dry locs before covering them
The rest week between styles is part of the protective cycle
Why This Matters
Each style family has different failure modes. Knowing the specific care each one needs is the difference between styles that grow hair and styles that quietly cost it.
