Lightweight oils — argan among them — spread easily and absorb readily, which makes them comfortable for finer hair and for the scalp. Richer emollients, like avocado, suit thicker, drier or more porous hair that drinks them without feeling weighed down. Heavy butters, like shea, seal beautifully on coarse or very dry textures but can leave fine hair limp.
Oils and butters don't add water — they slow its exit. They smooth the cuticle, add softness and shine, and lock in the moisture your leave-in just delivered. That's why the order matters: moisture first, seal second. Sealing dry hair just seals in the dryness.
Match weight to texture, porosity and climate: fine hair and humid climates favor light oils; thick, dry or porous hair in dry climates handles richer emollients well. And apply where the need lives — richness belongs to lengths and ends, not the scalp.
Key Takeaways
Light oils spread and absorb easily; heavy butters seal richly
Sealing slows moisture's exit — it doesn't add water
Moisture first, seal second — always in that order
Match product weight to texture, porosity and climate
Why This Matters
The same oil can be perfect for one person and a mistake for another. Knowing how weight and absorption work turns 'which oil should I use?' into a question you can answer yourself.
