Lesson 1.2

Reading an Ingredient List Like a Formulator

Written by Dr. Bre Hayward

Learning Objective

Understand how ingredient lists are ordered, what that reveals about a formula, and how to connect labels back to the Ingredient Library.

INCI, Decoded

Ingredients appear in INCI — a standardized international naming system — in descending order of concentration, down to about one percent, after which the order is the manufacturer's choice. The first five ingredients usually tell you most of what a product is.

Claims vs. Roles

A botanical extract featured in the marketing may appear near the end of the list — present, but at low concentration. That's not automatically a bad thing: many extracts are effective at small amounts. But position is honest information about how much of a formula an ingredient really is.

From Label to Library

You don't need to memorize chemistry — you need a good reference. When a label mentions an ingredient you don't know, look it up in the Ingredient Library to see what it is, why it's used and which products carry it. That habit is the fastest education in hair care there is.

Key Takeaways

Lists run in descending concentration, to about the 1% line

The first five ingredients tell you what a formula mostly is

Ingredient position is honest information — use it

Let the Ingredient Library do the remembering for you

Why This Matters

Label literacy protects you from marketing-first choices. A few minutes with a well-ordered list and a good reference tells you more than any advertisement.
