Lesson 1.2
Written by Dr. Bre Hayward
Learning Objective
Separate two ideas that are often blurred — biological growth at the root and length retention along the fiber — and learn what actually protects visible length.

Hair grows from the follicle beneath the scalp, at a pace set by your biology. But the length you see depends on how much of that growth survives washing, styling, friction, heat and manipulation. Growth happens at the root; visible length is a retention story.
A shed hair is a whole strand, released from the follicle, with a small club-shaped root at the end — completely normal. Breakage is different: the fiber snaps somewhere along its length, leaving shorter pieces and no root end. If you're seeing short broken pieces rather than full strands, the issue is fiber protection — not the growth cycle.
Retention is won through habits: moisture and conditioning to keep the fiber flexible, gentle detangling from ends to roots, lower heat with protection, satin at night, and low-manipulation styles. None of these grow hair — all of them help you keep it.
Key Takeaways
Growth happens beneath the scalp; visible length is retention along the fiber
Shed strands have a root end; broken pieces don't
Breakage faster than growth means hair that 'isn't growing' — even when it is
Moisture, gentle handling and low heat are retention tools
Why This Matters
Most 'my hair isn't growing' stories are actually retention stories. Understanding the difference tells you which habits to change — and why protecting the fiber is the most productive thing in your control.
